Year 4 STEM Day Success at FCC!

The Year 4s went to FCC for a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) day. After some discussion and introduction to forces such as friction and air resistance, children had to work in pairs to design their balloon powered car. Children were given a list of available equipment and given complete control of their design. They had to decide how many wheels they would use, the shape of the chassis and how they would make their design aerodynamic. After children had designed and made their cards they were given time to test their designs. This was the analysis phase where children tested their car and then identified areas in need of improvement, they really enjoyed this part and were all very focused of rectifying problems and improving their design ready for the race off at the end of the day.

The day ended with the big race off in the hall. The fastest 2 cars from each group were put forward to the final. It was a close run thing and all taken VERY seriously by the children. Narrowly, Buckland's car won but Watchfield took 2nd and 3rd place. An exciting and educational day, with much fun had by all.

Well done to everyone involved!
